Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT)
Vivitrol (Naltrexone)
Commonly known by the brand name Vivitrol, naltrexone is an opioid antagonist that’s injectable or taken in tablet form. Naltrexone is a medication approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat substance use disorders. It works by blocking the effects of alcohol or opioids, making it difficult to get high on them. If Vivitrol is part of your treatment plan, it should include behavioral therapy and other support. While Vivitrol can be effective in helping you recover from addiction, it’s not a cure.
Buprenorphine
Buprenorphine is a synthetic opioid medication that acts as a partial agonist at opioid receptors but does not produce the euphoria and sedation caused by heroin or other opioids. Buprenorphine can reduce or eliminate withdrawal symptoms associated with opioid dependence and carries a low risk of overdose.
